Description
The Environment and Production Technology Division (EPTD) of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a qualified candidate to serve as a Research Officer (RO). The RO will work with researchers in Washington DC and South Africa on various research projects in South Africa and others as needed.
The incumbent will work under the overall guidance of the IFPRI’s Research Fellow but will be employed directly by IFPRI’s organizational host in South Africa, the International Water Management Institute (IWMI). The employer of record will be IWMI and employment policies, compensation and benefits of IWMI will apply to this position. The final position title will be determined based on the candidate’s level of experience. Interested applicants must have work authorization to work in South Africa.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Specific duties include but are not limited to:
Conduct literature reviews & syntheses.
Assist with development of research instruments and analytical tools.
Conduct data analysis, statistical analysis, econometric analysis.
Co-author reports and edit publications.
Help develop & coordinate technical workshops (HQ and in the field).
Assist in preparation of discussion papers, donor reports, and briefs.
Maintain applicable websites, annotated bibliographies &/or project inventories.
Develop data documentation manuals or other learning materials, as needed.
Assist in handling different types of secondary data.
Assist in preparing large datasets for public access.
Interact with collaborators and project partners.
Reply to internal/external data requests.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Research Officer: Bachelor’s degree plus two years of relevant professional experience or Master’s degree in a social science (economics, sociology, or anthropology), international development studies, nutrition, public health, or a closely related field.
Senior Research Officer: Master’s degree plus minimum of three years of post-master’s relevant experience.
Experience in using statistical programming software, and willingness to learn new programming software/s.
Demonstrated strong writing skills.
Ability to travel.
Ability to perform quantitative data analysis.
Excellent drafting skills and analytical mind.
Excellent econometric skills on cross-section and panel data analysis.
Demonstrated ability to conduct research.
Demonstrated ability to perform in-depth statistical analysis and report the results.
Experienced in conducting literature reviews of academic publications, research reports, etc.
Demonstrated fluency in written and spoken English.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team-oriented multi-cultural environment.
Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage time well.
Demonstrated professional level of attention to detail and accuracy of work.
Ability to work independently, with initiative and minimal supervision.
Strong background in microeconomics.
Skilled in programming in STATA, GAMS and in managing databases.
Skilled in the use of economy-wide data and modelling frameworks, such as input-output analysis, social accounting matrices, partial equilibrium models, and general equilibrium models.
Demonstrated experience in effective interaction and coordination with collaborators and project partner.
Strong background in macroeconomics.
Proficiency in a second language of the U.N. system.
Familiarity with popular software packages & Internet based systems.
PHYSICAL DEMAND & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Employee will sit in an upright position for a long period of time.
Employee will lift between 0-10 pounds.
Employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing computer terminal; extensive reading.
Benefits
General information: This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position limited to South African nationals and permanent residents only. The contract will be for an initial period of one year (with a 6-month probation period) based in Pretoria, South Africa. Renewal is dependent on performance and availability of funds.
