Water Program ABOUT US Summer 2022 Student Position Duke University
Durham, NC, USA 🇺🇸
The Water Policy Program (WPP) is seeking a full-time student intern to work on the ABOUT-US project, part of the greater Internet of Water project. A BOundary Update Tool for Utility Services (ABOUT-US) will enable water and wastewater utilities to create and maintain digital service area boundaries through the development of an open source, free technology. The project will also develop online tools that spatially link climate, sociodemographic, environmental, and other pertinent data with the digital service area boundaries to better equip and enable utilities to (1) meet regulatory reporting requirements; (2) pursue external funding for infrastructure improvements; (3) improve emergency preparedness, mitigation, and resilience planning; and (4) enhance decision-making.
The student intern will work in collaboration with the WPP team and partners at the NC Rural Water Association to conduct engagements for the development of the ABOUT-US tool. Partners will engage with rural water utilities throughout the state in the development of ABOUT-US to maximize the tool’s usability and adoption. We will pursue at least three avenues of engagement: in-person trainings, focus groups, and workshops. First, NCRWA offers regular trainings to rural water utilities throughout the state. We will share ABOUT-US with 10-15 utilities at each training, to get feedback on its usability and functionality. We will also explore what types of data would be beneficial to incorporate with their service area boundaries for future iterations of the tool.
Experience with engagement preferred but not required.
This position is open to students who are currently residing in North Carolina.
