Quantitative Freshwater Ecologist
Cawthron Institute
Nelson, New Zealand
Cawthron Institute is New Zealand’s largest independent research organisation. We are a diverse organisation employing around 300 scientists, technicians, and other staff from 35 countries. We pride ourselves in providing a supportive family-like environment for staff to thrive and reach their potential. Creativity, collaboration, and impact are encouraged, and there is a strong focus on ensuring scientists have a healthy work-life balance and contribute to the Nelson community.
We have an exciting opportunity for an early career researcher to join our Freshwater Group. The successful candidate will lead and contribute to research and consultancy projects on freshwater ecosystems, often collaborating with our social, coastal and other freshwater scientists.
The role involves using ecological modelling to enhance understanding of biophysical drivers and responses in complex aquatic ecosystems, in both research and consultancy projects, to generate positive impact for communities and the environment. You will co-lead research in Fish Futures , a transdisciplinary research programme in partnership with Māori researchers, iwi and freshwater fish managers, with opportunities to contribute to other projects as well as develop your own research.
You will be joining an active, collaborative team that is engaged in both critical research and practical issues of the day with tangata whenua, businesses, councils, and central government.
We are looking for someone with a PhD or MSc in a relevant discipline and at least 12 months’ work experience. The ideal candidate would have strong freshwater community ecology skills with experience in mechanistic modelling, and excellent science communication skills with experience in scientific writing, public speaking, and preparation of client reports. In addition, a familiarity with NZ’s resource management system, and having an established network of clients and collaborators is desirable.
We are interested in enthusiastic, self-driven candidates who enjoy working in a team.
Please apply via our Vacancies page with a CV and cover letter by Sunday 5th June 2022.
